Population: There are no exact data on the number of Western Yellow Wagtails in Kazakhstan, but in Europe, the breeding populationis estimated at between 9.6 million and 16 million pairs. The population shows a downward trend.
Status: Non-endangered species of no economicvalue, but with ecological and cultural significance.
Habitat: It breeds in the northern half of Kazakhstan, and is observed almost everywhere during the migration period. It inhabits moist meadows with tall grass and sparse bushes or reed margins; wet lake shores and flood meadows on plains and foothills up to altitudes of 400-450 m above sea level. During migration, it appears in desert plains near water sources; reed beds (where birds congregate in thousands); and occasionally in the highlands at elevations up to 3200 m above sea level.
