Population: The global population is estimated at 2.6–2.8 million individuals. There are 704,000 – 1.05 million mature individuals in Europe. In Kazakhstan, it is a common, sometimes numerous, nesting migratory bird, there is no data on the total number.  

Status. Non-endangered game animal

Habitat.  It breeds throughout Kazakhstan, including in the southern Altai (up to 1,500 m) and in the Zhaiyk delta, with the exception of the Aral Sea deserts. It is found everywhere on the fly. It occasionally winters south of Shymkent, in the lower reaches of the Arys and Keles rivers.
