Population: In 2015 it amounted to 295.4 thousand individuals. However, in May 2015, there was a mass death of the Betpakdalian saiga population (almost 80% of the population). The cause of death isconsidered to be pasteurellosis. There after their numbers began to recover. According to the results of the 2019 air census, the total number of saigas in Kazakhstan amounted to 334,400 individuals. By 2023 the population had increased to 1.2 million. In 2024, according to official data, there were 2.8 million individuals.

Status: A game animal the number of which is subject to regulation.

Habitat: Saiga in Kazakhstan lives in Western parts of the country, in the interfluve of the Volga and the Urals, on Ustyurt – partly in Mangystau, as well as Aktobe andAtyrau regions. The largest population of saigas is Betpakdalinskaya, located in the territories of Karaganda, Akmola, and Kostanay regions.
