Population: As of 2023, the total number ofkulans in Kazakhstan was more than 4 thousand individuals.

Status: Globally declining in population (Category II).

Habitat: By the early 20th century, it had disappeared from the territory of Kazakhstan. In 1953, eight Turkmenian kulans were reintroduced the Barsakelmes Island (Aral Sea), where they successfully reproduced.
