Population: In Kazakhstan in the 2020s, from 1.88 to 2 thousand pairs nested. In the global range, the number is estimated to be from 11.4 to 13.4 thousand adults.
Status. A rare and endangered species. Category II. A declining species with local habitats.
Distribution. The coasts of Southern Europe, the reservoirs of Western Siberia, Asia Minor, some lakes of Mongolia and Xinjiang. In Kazakhstan, it breeds in the reservoirs of the Ural region, on the northern and northeastern coast of the Caspian Sea, in the Turgai hollow, the Naurzum Reserve, the Tengiz-Kurgaldzhinsky depression, the middle reaches of the Syrdarya, Lake Balkhash, in the deltas of the Ili, Tentek and Black Irtysh rivers.
