Population: The Swan Goose was relatively common in East Kazakhstan 100 years ago, but has been encountered only twice in the last 15 years. The total number of wintering birds in the world is 54.4 thousand individuals. The proportion of adults is unknown, but it is estimated that their total number is between 36 thousand and 43 thousand individuals.
Status: A rare and endangered species currently on the verge of extinction (Category I).
Habitat: At the beginning of the 20th century it nested on the Ukok plateaunear the borders of Kazakhstan, in the delta of the Irtysh river below Zaisan Lake, and 25 km above Semipalatinsk, and reportedly on Lake Markakol inthe Southern Altai. Until the middle of the 20th century, it often appeared in the Ili Valley, in the interfluve of the Syr Darya and AmuDarya. Until 2000, the species was regularly observed on Lake Turanga Bay. In 2023, three dry-nosed geese were observed here among the thousands of gray geese.
