Population: A full assessment of the number of species in Kazakhstan has not been carried out, but a reduction is expected. From 2003 to 2006, an estimated 1.2 thousand to 1.5 thousand pairs nested in the Aral-Caspian region. The global population of the species is estimated at between 180 thousand and 500 thousand mature individuals.

Status: A rare and endangered species with rapidly declining numbers (Category II).

Habitat. It is widespread in Eurasia. It sporadically inhabits the entire territory of Kazakhstan, including the plains and mountains of Eastern, Southeastern, and Central Kazakhstan, Betpakdala, the Aral Sea region, Mangyshlak, Ustyurt and the Volga-Ural interfluve.
