Population: The global population is estimated at 280-470 thousand individuals. There are 117-149 thousand mature individuals in Europe. In Kazakhstan, it is a common, sometimes rare nesting migratory bird, there is no data on the total number.

Habitat. In Kazakhstan, it sporadically breeds in saline reservoirs north to the Kamysh-Samara lakes, Lake Shalkar, the lower reaches of the Ilek, Lakes Mokroe and Tengiz in the Kostanay region, Petropavlovsk, Pavlodar Zairtysh and Zaisan basin. It is found everywhere on the plains.
