Population: A preliminary estimate of the total number in the world is 267-556 thousand. The European population is estimated at 40-83 thousand mature individuals. A fairly rare nesting migratory bird in Kazakhstan, there are no numbers.  

Status. A rare and endangered species declining in numbers.

Habitat.  It breeds in the steppes and forest-steppes of northern Kazakhstan, as well as in the mountains of the east and south-east of the country, rising to an altitude of 2500-3000 m. It is found everywhere on the fly, winters along the Irtysh and Syr Darya, in the foothills of Altai and Tien Shan.
