Population: The global population is estimated at 925 thousand - 1.03 million individuals, which is equivalent to 617-687 thousand mature individuals. The estimates are lower due to a recent taxonomic split, in which Haematopus finschi, a former subspecies, was separated into a separate species. A fairly rare nesting migratory bird in Kazakhstan, there are no numbers.
Status. Non-endangered species with economic value other than hunting
Habitat. It breeds near reservoirs and on islands in the steppe and forest-steppe zones of Kazakhstan, as well as in the deserts of the Southern Balkhash region, along the valleys of the Syr Darya, Shu and Mangyshlak along the coast of the Caspian Sea.
