Population: In the middle of the 20th century, there were about 200 thousand gazelles in Kazakhstan, now their number is estimated to be about 15 thousand.  

Status. A rare and endangered species declining in numbers. Category II.

Habitat.  Until the mid-20th century, it inhabited almost the entiresemi-desert and desert zones of Kazakhstan, with a continuous range from the Caspian Sea to the Ili Basin. The northern boundary ran along the 47th parallel; currently, in most parts of its range, it has shifted far to the south. Separate isolated populations have formed in Taukum, Moiynkum, Kyzylkum, Ustirt-Mangyshlak, and in the Ili Basin. Their range is no longer continuous. Presently, goitered gazelles are absent from the Alakol and Zaisan basins and much of the northern part of the Betpak-Dala desert.
