Population: There is a common nesting migratory bird in Kazakhstan, which numbers 1.9–4.8 thousand pairs. The current global population is estimated at 150-190 thousand mature individuals. There are 6-12,1 thousand couples in Europe.  

Status. Non-endangered species with economic value other than hunting

Habitat.  It breeds in the northern half of Kazakhstan, south to the Kamysh-Samara lakes, the northern coast of the Caspian Sea, the lower reaches of the Torgai and the Zaisan basin. Colonies are known for Lake Telikol. It is found everywhere on the span, excluding mountains.
