Population: The global population is estimated at 3.9–4.2 million individuals. There are 92.8–155 thousand mature individuals in Europe. In Kazakhstan, there is a common, sometimes numerous nesting migratory bird, there is no data on the total number.  

Status. Non-endangered species with economic value other than hunting

Habitat.  In Kazakhstan, it breeds in reservoirs everywhere, both on the plain and in the mountains (in Altai at altitudes up to 1,450 m), excluding deserts, and occasionally visits the highlands (Bolshoe Almaty Lake).
