Population: The global population is estimated at 1.2-2 million mature individuals, but clarification is required. It is a common nesting migratory bird in Kazakhstan, and in some places it lives sedentary.
Status. Non-endangered species with economic value other than hunting
Habitat. It breeds in the northern half of Kazakhstan (excluding the Northern Balkhash region and Betpak Dala), south to the lower reaches of the Zhaiyk, the mouth of the Syr Darya, the southern edge of the Taukums near Kangshengel, Kopa station and Almaty. In the Southwestern Altai, it breeds in the floodplain of the Irtysh, Bukhtarma and on Lake Markakol, in Kolba, as well as in the Zaisan basin. It is also found on the fly in Mangyshlak, Ustyurt and in Southern Kazakhstan, in the mountains at altitudes of 1500-2000 meters. In winter, the swamp owl has been recorded in the Zhaiyk Valley, the Northern Aral Sea region, the Kazakh Small-scale Forest, in the east and south-east of the republic.
