Status. A species that is the object of hunting

Habitat.  The range of the common squirrel covers the forest areas of Europe and Asia from the Pyrenees in the west to the Pacific coast in the east. In the past, when coniferous forests stretched from Altai to the Urals, the squirrel may have been more widespread. The reduction of forests has led to the fragmentation of its range. There are three subspecies in Kazakhstan: the teleut squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris exalbidus), the Kalba squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris kalbinensis) and the Altai squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris altaicus). In Kazakhstan, the natural habitat of the teleutka squirrel is occupied by ribbon pine forests along the right bank of the Irtysh. In 1927-1948 . It has been successfully acclimatized in the island pine forests of Central and Northern Kazakhstan. In 1952-1964, the teleut squirrel was acclimatized in the spruce forests of the Dzungarian Alatau and Tien Shan, including Kungei Alatau. The Kalbinsky squirrel inhabits the Ayudinsky and Koyandinsky forests of the Kalbinsky range on the left bank of the Irtysh. The Altai squirrel inhabits the coniferous forests of Southern Altai on the right bank of the Irtysh. This subspecies is also found in the forests of the Kalbinsky range..
