Population: In recent decades, between 120 and 130 pairs have been observed nesting in Kazakhstan. Globally, the population is estimated at between 28.2 thousand and 58.4 thousand mature individuals..  

Status. A rare and endangered species with dwindling numbers (Category II).

Habitat.  In the first half of the 20th century, sea eagles were common in many reservoirs of Kazakhstan, but over the past 30-40 years it has disappeared from a number of places. In the 1980s and 1990s, it nested in the Kazakh partof the Volga River delta, on Kushum (Volga-Ural interfluve), in the floodplain of the Ural River, on lakes of the Kostanay region, in the Syrdarya valley, in the Balkash-Alakol depression and in various eastern parts of the republic..
