Population: Extremely rare. There is noup-to-date data on the number of porcupines in Kazakhstan..  

Status. A rare and insufficientlystudied species (Category IV).

Habitat.  Found in Southern Mangyshlak, the Talas, Kyrgyz, and Ile Alatau, as well as the Karatau and Shu-Ile Mountains. In Southern Mangyshlak, it is found in the Kendirli-Kayasan Plateau area, near the Elshibek well, and on the Zhabaiushkan escarpment. In the Talas Alatau, it is found in the Aksu-Sairam interfluve; in the Ile Alatau, in the western foothills of Zhetyzholand Kastek; and in the Kyrgyz Alatau, in the gorges of Kokdonen, Aspara, Merke,Karakystak, Karakat, Sarybulak, and Chyngur. In the Syrdarya Karatau, it is found in the southeastern part and in the Minor Karatau range..
