Population: Between 32.5 thousand and 36.6 thousand flamingos were discovered in the northeast of the Caspian Sea in April 2023. The global population is estimatedat between 550 thousand and 680 thousand individuals.
Status: A rare and endangered species (Category II). A locally breeding species with a declining population.
Habitat: Central America, Africa and southern Eurasia. In Kazakhstan, it breeds in only three places: Lake Tengiz in the Akmola region, Chelkar Tengiz Lake (Turgai depression) and the northeastern coast of the Caspian Sea, where they nested until the late 1950s and reappeared in the late 1970s.
